Telling Ohio's Story

When the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks was fortunate enough to visit with key members of the leadership staff at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), including CEO Robert Velasco II, we took the opportunity to tell them about not only our history with national service, but our gratitude for the contributions it has made to our great state.

CNCS CEO Robert Velasco II, Director of Senior Corps Erwin Tan, MD, and CNCS Chief of Field Operations Mike Berning toured one of our member host sites, SON Ministries in Hilliard, OH, during their July 19 visit. They were joined by Ben Famous, Central Ohio Regional Representative for the Office of Senator Sherrod Brown, Sarah Brady, CNCS State Program Specialist in Ohio, as well as members of the OASHF leadership team.

Following a round table discussion about best practices for monitoring and compliance, independent program evaluation, and leveraging additional private and public resources, those in attendance toured the Summer Food Service Program operated by SON Ministries. Participating neighborhood children are engaged in fun, educational activities in a safe environment, while also benefiting from a free healthy, nutritious lunch.

Mr. Velasco took a moment to don sanitary gloves and pass out the delicious lunches of turkey wraps, plums, broccoli, and chocolate milk out to participating children. Thanks to the help of VISTA Summer Associates, the kids at the Hilliard Free Summer Lunch program, as well as at many other programs across the state, are able to stay safe, healthy, and well-fed throughout their summer vacations.
